Journal 1: My course aims and expectations

    This journal will discuss about my course aims and expectations in DECO1800. My aim is that to design a good project with my peers and to acquire more knowledge about web development.

    According to my general understanding of DECO1800, this course provides a further step for applying the knowledge I learned in DECO1400, such as HTML/CSS and Javascript. However, these are quite different. This course mainly focuses on the process within designing an interactive web project with peers. Based on that, I expect that l can improve my technique skills of software this semester in order to create a more stable and efficient website.

    For designing a better web system, I want to learn basic application of PHP because l had not studied it before. However, it is an important program language for web development, which has been widely used. Therefore, I plan to use this opportunity to obtain some foundational PHP skills.

    A good web design not only needs programming skills, but also needs critical design thinking. For example, even though some websites has beautiful appearance, it might not match clients’ wants and needs. These webs would likely fails in customers’ experience. Consider these aspects, l hope that I can get different ideas from lectures and team members. In addition, I want to learn more design methods and principles, like how to get users’ feedback, thereby improving my own web project. Thus, I would understand how to design a useful website. Not just know how to write code, I want to ensure the functionality has meaning for usage. If I can know how to create a web design via innovative way, it will be great. By the way, I also hope that l can make new friends with my team.

    On the other hand, I am a little bit worried about I may not reach an agreement with my partners when we get some challenges in design process. The reason is that different people have different idea and design a project is complicate. When the group allocates works, it might cause some difficulty. On the other hands, it is a good chance to learn something of cooperation.
